You see it everywhere- on your pillow, sleeve, drain and wherever- that strand of hair, which just breaks off from the rest. And you know you have that dreaded problem which most people in the world suffer from- hair fall. It is more like an epidemic which is slowly being accepted as a part of our grown up lives. With our lifestyles and the quality of air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat, hair fall is catching up with young people too. Men and women are at their wits’ ends trying to figure out a solution which is inexpensive and permanent.
But what causes hair fall? Several factors contribute to it and well some of them are common to both men and women.
You may have heard this one before and it is pretty true. If your parents are not too blessed with a thick, lustrous mop of hair, chances are you are not going to be too lucky either. However, this gene can come from your mother or dad’s side.
2. Deficiency of certain nutrients
The food you eat plays a very important role in the health of your hair. Your hair needs Vitamins A, C, protein, iron, omega 3, zinc, biotin etc. to be lustrous, shiny and strong. If your diet constantly lacks these nutrients, hair fall is inevitable. Consult a dietician to improve your hair and skin.
Yes, you heard it right. The water we bathe in does contribute to the health of our skin and hair to some extent. If your water supply is largely treated with harsh chemicals, they could affect your hair.
4. Coloring and treatments
This is more applicable to women. They love to experiment with their look and sometimes choose to color their hair a wild red or straighten it permanently. But, think twice before you take this step. Most hair colors contain ammonia in small amounts which can irreversibly damage the hair cuticle.
Also, a lot of hair smoothing treatments for frizzy hair contain chemicals like methylene glycol, formalin, methanal, and methanediol which are ingredients that release formaldehyde when heated or mixed with water. So, if you do consider a smoothing treatment make sure that these chemicals are not present in it.
In today’s world, this is probably the leading cause of hair loss. Work-related stress or familial pressures can take a toll on your mental well-being but also cause heavy hair loss. There are, in fact, three kinds of hair loss that can happen due to stress. In telogen effluvium, a lot of hair follicles are pushed to a resting stage. So, within a few months, you may notice many strands of hair falling off on their own, or when you wash or comb your hair.
With trichotillomania, one has the urge to pull out hair from the scalp, eyebrows or other parts of your body. The third kind is alopecia areata, where the immune system of the body attacks hair follicles and causes hair loss.
6. Tight Ponytails or Pulled Back Hair
Ladies, if you constantly pull your hair back with a tight scrunchy, it tends to become weaker at the roots and falls off eventually. Always tie a loose ponytail.
Nothing can guarantee a thick mane. But you can take some steps to reduce hair fall. Eat protein-rich foods because your hair is made of keratin, which is a type of protein. Not just that, feed your hair a lot of vitamins, minerals, zinc and iron. Vegetables like spinach, broccoli, carrots, onion, curry leaves must be included in your diet. Also, salmon is considered to be healthy hair food because it is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which cannot be processed in the body naturally.
